Types of Breast Implants

Breast implants, available at our plastic surgery practice in Mazatlán, come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and textures. The two primary types are saline breast implants and silicone implants.

Saline Filled Breast Implants

In the U.S.A., saline breast implants are the most common breast implants in use. The implant shell is filled with a salt-water solution, not silicone. This is typically considered a safer alternative to silicone because the body can more easily absorb saline in case the implant ruptures. One disadvantage of saline breast implants is their higher risk of developing a condition called rippling. In addition, there is a risk of capsular contracture, which is a condition caused by scar tissue surrounding the implants, making the breasts feel hardened. Saline breast implants are also heavier than silicone implants, which can cause drooping after a few years.

Silicone Gel Breast Implants

In Mexico, silicone breast implants are the most popular in use by plastic surgeons. Silicone breast implants are made of a silicone shell encasing silicone gel. These implants typically have a more natural feel because the consistency of silicone is similar to human breast tissue. Silicone implants are also known to have less of a risk of a rippling appearance under the skin. Women who are extremely thin or patients undergoing breast reconstruction often achieve better results with silicone breast implants. However, silicone implants have a number of risks, including rupture that can go undetected. Silicone breast implants also have a higher incidence of capsular contracture than saline implants.

The Breast Enlargement Procedure

Breast enlargement is typically an outpatient procedure performed at our Mazatlán, Mexico facility. It normally takes about two hours to complete, and general anesthesia is usually required. Before the surgery, you and Dr. Trapero will decide on where he will place the incisions. The incisions can be placed in a number of different areas, including through the armpit, around the nipple, or under the crease of the breast. The breast implants can go directly under the skin, or behind the chest muscle.

Post-Operative Recovery

There are generally some temporary side effects associated with breast enlargement with implants, including soreness and breast sensitivity, but these can be alleviated with medication. Daily activities can generally be resumed about two to three weeks after the procedure.

Breast Augmentation Risks

Any kind of surgery involves risks, including breast augmentation with implants. Some of the complications that can arise include:

  • Capsular Contracture
